ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Debt Counsel for Seniors and the Disabled was established to help the growing number of individuals whose rights are being consistently violated by creditors and collection agencies. DCSD is an attorney-supervised debt assistance program that can stop harassing phone calls and threatening letters that seniors and disabled people receive when they cannot pay their credit card and other bills that have been turned over to collections.
DCSD is for individuals whose only income is from Social Security, disability, pensions, or veteran’s benefits and therefore do not have sufficient income to pay their unsecured debts. Because their income is exempt from garnishment under federal law, DCSD informs creditors and collectors that collection is futile and works with them to have the debts written off as uncollectible.
Remember, the service only applies to unsecured debts like credit cards, medical and hospitals bills, or loans for which no collateral was given. You must continue to meet your mortgage, automobile or other secured loans if you wish to keep this property.
Because DCSD acts as your attorney, creditors, collections agencies and collection lawyers cannot harass you since to do so would be a violation of the law. Consequently, all harassing calls and letters are directed to the lawyers at DCSD and not to you. Additionally, DCSD educates you about your debtor’s rights.
